Women continue to break barriers in traditionally male-dominated industries, and Dy鈥橝shia McCoy is one of many students proving that the electrical trades are no exception.

McCoy, a native of Blakely in Early County, Georgia, graduated from high school in May 2022. She enrolled at South Georgia Technical College soon after and has already made an impression in the Electrical Systems Technology program. She successfully completed 60 hours of coursework and earned her first diploma in December 2024.

During a recent interview with Yobo体育 Career Services Director Cynthia Carter, McCoy shared that she chose to attend South Georgia Tech for its smaller campus environment, on-campus housing and strong technical programs. 鈥淢y younger sister is a full-time student at Fort Valley State University,鈥 McCoy said. 鈥淏ut I preferred a more hands-on learning experience and a close-knit campus community.鈥

Not content with just one credential, McCoy immediately enrolled in the Industrial Systems Technology program and is on track to receive her second diploma by the end of this year.

Her long-term goal is to become a licensed electrical contractor, working in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. According to her instructor, Patrick Owen, McCoy is a standout student and a natural leader in the hands-on lab environment. 鈥淪he鈥檚 dependable, confident, and takes initiative鈥攕he鈥檚 a team leader and sets a great example for her peers,鈥 Owen said.

With her dedication, skills, and drive, Dy鈥橝shia McCoy is lighting the way for more women to enter and excel in the skilled trades.
