As Justin McCardle prepares to graduate from Marion County High School in May, he already has another major accomplishment to celebrate: earning a diploma in Diesel Equipment Technology from South Georgia Technical College through the college鈥檚 Dual Enrollment program.

Justin began his journey at Yobo体育 as a high school sophomore studying Criminal Justice. But he quickly discovered that his real passion was the hands-on work he was already doing with his father, Jamie, who owns and operates his own business.

鈥淚 grew up in that kind of field because he has been doing it all his life,鈥 Justin said. 鈥淚 just kind of had a knack for it and fell in love with it.鈥

Dual Enrollment gave Justin the opportunity to explore that passion early. He attended night classes on the Americus campus while still in high school. 鈥淚t helps you get opportunities earlier and faster,鈥 he said, 鈥渁nd gives you more opportunities as you go on down the line.鈥

His parents agree. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to do four years of high school, graduate, and then do however many years of college to get started to where you want to be,鈥 said Justin鈥檚 mother, Rebecca. Laughing, she added, 鈥淵ou can get started earlier and start making money earlier.鈥

Jamie McCardle said the program is a great fit for motivated students. 鈥淚 wish they had that when I was coming through school,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 see things through Justin鈥檚 eyes now that I wish I had done when I was his age to have a better start.鈥

Justin credited the Yobo体育 Dual Enrollment team with helping make the process seamless. 鈥淭hey made it really simple for me,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was all laid out. They told you what you needed to do and how to do it.鈥

His advice for others considering the program? 鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot of work, but if you can handle it, you鈥檒l have a leg up on anyone who didn鈥檛 take that opportunity.鈥

While Justin isn鈥檛 sure of his long-term plans just yet, he鈥檚 already looking ahead to his next step: enrolling in Yobo体育鈥檚 Welding and Joining Technology program while continuing to work alongside his father.

鈥淚鈥檝e done welding before, and it鈥檚 also something I really enjoy,鈥 he said. 鈥淪o I figure go ahead and take it, and that way you鈥檙e certified.鈥
