Back to Class After 45 Years: David Price鈥檚 Yobo体育 Story Comes Full Circle
David Price is a first-semester student currently enrolled in the Electrical Systems Technology program at South Georgia Technical College. But David is far from a traditional first-semester or first-time student.
His journey with South Georgia Tech began more than 45 years ago and over 200 miles away, when he was a vocational student at Camden County High School in his hometown of St. Marys, Georgia. It was there that he met Leonard Banks and Carlos Jones鈥攖wo instructors with ties to Americus and alumni of South Georgia Tech鈥攚ho encouraged David to follow his dream of becoming an electrician. With their support, he chose to forego his senior year of high school and early-enroll at South Georgia Tech.
In October 1978, David enrolled in the Industrial Maintenance Technology program at what was then known as South Georgia Vocational and Technical School, graduating in 1980. While a student, he helped establish the college鈥檚 first chapter of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (now known as SkillsUSA) and served as its first chapter president. In 1990, he returned to Yobo体育 to earn a degree in Welding and Joining Technology, and in 2008, he completed a degree in Technology Management from Georgia Southwestern State University.
After moving to Americus, David began a career in the automotive manufacturing industry with Textron Automotive, which spanned more than 45 years and included roles at Rehau Automotive, Nissan, and Chrysler. His work took him across Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Indiana before retiring in 2024. While working, David stayed involved with Yobo体育, serving on advisory committees for Electrical Systems Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, and Welding and Joining Technology, as well as a state committee evaluating similar programs across Georgia.
Recently, David met with Cynthia Carter, Yobo体育 Career Services Director, to discuss his return to the classroom and his non-traditional student experience. When asked why he came back to Yobo体育, he said it鈥檚 because he鈥檚 always enjoyed learning. He also values the opportunity to share his professional experience and offer advice to fellow students.
Electrical Systems Technology instructor Patrick Owen described David as a vital asset to the program due to his extensive knowledge of automation and robotics in manufacturing. Owen, who is also a well-known musician and band leader, added that he enjoys chatting with David about music trivia, another shared passion.
When asked what he found most fascinating about his career, David said, 鈥淪eeing all of the changes in technology. When I started working in the 1970s, the only technology cars had were power windows and power locks. Now, they鈥檙e like offices on wheels with internet, navigation screens, and more.鈥 One of his fondest memories is attending the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany鈥攐ne of the world鈥檚 most prestigious auto shows, drawing over a million visitors.
